Contractors

It happens all too often in Springfield, Mo – building and remodel contractors taking advantage of the elderly in our fair city.  Is it fair?  No.  Is it legal, ethical or moral?  Nope!  And yet, it happens all the time.

First and foremost, charging a high premium for flooring doesn’t necessarily make a flooring contractor or remodeler a bad person – just as there are luxury clothing stores in Springfield, Mo and discount clothing shops, there are different brands and different qualities of work.

Ways Contractors Take Advantage of the Elderly in Springfield, Mo.

  1. Gimmicks which ensure you’ll hire them even if you are already unhappy with them. A “now we HAVE to use them” approach.

Many “discount” or “cheap” flooring companies in SW Missouri have a habit of undercharging labor and overcharging on materials…this is so you HAVE to use them to install the product instead of another company.  We’ve seen it before and we will see it again – a customer is unhappy with the contractors of one of these stores, so when he or she calls another installation company and gets their installation price, it looks to be WAY more expensive than the store he or she already bought the materials from.  This gives the illusion that other flooring companies in SW Missouri are trying to pull a fast one on them, when in reality, the “discount” or “cheap” flooring stores are messing with the prices so you have no choice but to go with them as your contractor.

Note:  this happens all the time!

  1. They can try to sell you something you don’t need.

How many times have you heard a funny sound in your car and took it to the mechanic without finding out where the noise is originating from?  The same thing can happen to an elderly person.  They know there is a leak in their HVAC unit, and when they call a specialist over, the “specialist” tells them they need a whole new unit instead of a simple bolt or screw.  Often times, contractors receive commissions from products they sell – so why settle when they KNOW an elderly client doesn’t know the difference between their HVAC unit needing a new bolt or a new system altogether?

  1. Contractors don’t give you a written quotation.

We have seen this before and it really grinds our gears.

We know this, and MANY people know this, but all too often it happens that a quotation is not written down, so an elderly person has no idea what they are paying for.  Not too long ago, we received a call from a lady who had been given a quotation over the phone, but it was not written down.  We went out of our way to receive the written quotation for her, and when we saw it, it was a situation similar to the first example.  They overcharged materials and undercharged labor.  Our guess was they wrote it up on the spot (maybe that’s why it took us a couple of days to receive the quote in the first place).

Our suggestion is to always get a written quote – or three! And do your research – look up reviews of whoever you have received your quote from so you know what you are getting yourself into!

  1. Bribes and threats.

Fear is an icky emotion – and it feels even worse when you have a job half-finished and your contractor is threatening to pull the plug on the project unless you pay him the rest of the amount.  If your contractor has given you a quotation, there are chances unseen issues could arise (you can see it sometimes in Fixer Upper).  Before a job begins however, a pay schedule is usually discussed and agreed upon.  Don’t be duped into paying early – they may just leave you high and dry!

All things considered, our recommendation is the following:

  • Get at least three WRITTEN quotations.
  • Look for online google and/or FB reviews, person-to-person referrals (ask your friends and family if they know anyone) and ratings from the BBB.
  • Once you agree to a pay schedule, stick to it or modify it if other issues arise.

The last thing we want is another call from an elderly person, only to find out they bought shoddy materials from a company who didn’t go through their procedures thoroughly.  If you do it right the first time, you don’t have to go back and do it again!

Flooring

Whether you are looking for your home, office or rental, finding the right floors for high traffic areas is crucial.  I am quite particular myself – if I do something (or hire someone to do something), I want it done right the first time so they don’t have to go back over it and redo it.  I also am fond of the “one-and-done” mentality:  install a quality, durable floor right the first time so I don’t have to keep replacing it every couple of years!

All things considered, if you have a high traffic area in your home, office or rental, you may want to choose flooring which can withstand the stress it will inevitably go under.

The Best Floors for High Traffic Areas

Tile Floors

Pros

Glazed ceramic tile is very durable and resistant to scratches and is also water resistant. Tile comes in a variety of sizes and materials, such as marble, porcelain, travertine, slate, and granite.  Tile is also easy to clean.

Cons

Grout can be difficult to clean, tile can be cold to walk on, and can be loud to walk on (especially in heels).  There are heating pads which can go under the tile but those come with additional costs.

Laminate Floors

Pros

Laminate is a very affordable option for flooring.  It doesn’t scratch easily (you can get almost any scratch out with a big of vegetable oil) and it can look like real tile or hardwood floors and it is easy to maintain.

Cons

Standing water can destroy your laminate flooring.  You cannot refinish laminate flooring so once it has been damaged, that is it!

Solid Hardwood Floors

Pros

Looks nice, easy to maintain and increases the value of your home.

Cons

Like tile, hardwoods can be loud to walk on, plus they are much more expensive than other types of flooring.  Keep in mind hardwood floors will require refinishing from time to time.

Engineered Hardwood Floors

Pros

Engineered hardwood floors are often more durable than solid hardwood floors.  There are also options available whereby you can purchase water resistant engineered hardwood floors.  You can also refinished engineered hardwood depending on its’ thickness.  It also is less likely to swell or warp due to moisture.

Cons

If you get an engineered hardwood floor where the veneer is too thin (the wooden outer layer of the floor), you can’t refinish your floors!  Also, while the look and feel of engineered hardwood is much like real hardwood floors, it is still more pricey than tile, laminate or carpet to install.

Floors NOT good for High Traffic Areas

Now that we have touched on some of the best floors for high traffic areas, let’s get into some flooring you will want to avoid in your high traffic areas: the two being vinyl flooring and carpet.

Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl flooring is susceptible to yellowing over time, as well as ripping and tearing if you are using sub-par materials.  Additionally, it has to be installed correctly – any small grains caught underneath the vinyl can cause bumps which can lead to rips and tears as well.  Unfortunately, while a quality vinyl floor can last up to 20 years, vinyl is often created with chemicals which, when installed, can linger in the air causing eye, and throat irritations.

Vinyl flooring is not impervious to scratches, which is why it isn’t that great for high traffic areas.

Carpet

Where natural wool carpet is durable and long-lasting, it is susceptible to stains and can be expensive.  It is really great at absorbing wine, juices and pet stains, and unfortunately can be discolored easily.  Be cautious of using bleach – it can completely dissolve the material!

Synthetic carpet, on the other hand, is stain resistant and can be exceptionally strong.  However, there is less variety and it is often easily damaged.  High-traffic areas is not so good for polyester carpet, and synthetic carpet can be damaged by heat and too much friction.

In summary, regardless of your budget you can find quality flooring which can withstand high traffic areas in your home, office or rental.

When renovating your home, rental or office setting, people often look to buy carpet for installation.  The reasoning is if you buy and install the right kind of carpet, it will last a long time.  But how do you know what kind of carpet is best for your space, and what are the downsides to buying a lesser quality carpet?

The Downsides to Buying Cheap Carpet in Springfield, Mo.

Buying cheap carpet in Springfield, Mo. doesn’t necessarily mean that the carpet itself is cheap – it could be excess quality carpet from a large construction job, also called carpet remnants.  Carpet remnants can also be the end of a carpet roll in a store.  Often, flooring stores in Springfield, Branson, Nixa, Ozark, Republic and Rogersville all purchase carpet in bulk so they can save money.  When they get towards the end of the carpet bolt, they often mark it as a sale item in order to sell off the remaining carpet.

Whether you are buying quality carpet remnants leftover from a construction job or simply purchasing cheap carpet in order to cut costs on a renovation in Springfield, Mo., there are a few downsides you should know about.

Carpet Remnants Often Come Without a Warranty.

Even if you buy quality carpet remnants for a cheap price, often this type of carpet doesn’t come with a warranty.  So, buyer beware!

Selection is Often Limited with Carpet Remnants.

If you are purchasing a carpet remnant, selection is usually low.

Find the Right Size Can Be an Issueut.

Purchasing a carpet remnant can be hassle – one because of the above-mentioned selection, and two, finding the right size.  Carpet remnants are usually at the end of the bolt, so there may only be twenty feet or less of available carpet.

Polyester carpet – cheap financially and in performance.

While polyester carpet fiber is attractive due to it being inexpensive, color choices and cushiness, it tends to shed and isn’t as durable as nylon.  Great to exercise on, but not great for high-traffic areas in your home or office!  Find something with at least a 34 to 40 oz face weight.  The higher the face weight, the heavier and more resilient the carpet!

Flooring

They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression, and having the wrong floor in your office can drastically affect your clients’ first impression of you while simultaneously affecting your bottom line.

For example, my associate and I used to frequent a lovely local coffee shop in Springfield, Mo.  Their coffee was exquisite, and like any designer coffee establishment, their coffee prices were comparable to a notable big chain which hails from Seattle, WA.  Anywho, we’ve been going there for some time and after a while, their laminate floors started coming up, peeling and chipping.  In fact, after a while, no matter how well they cleaned their floors, they still looked awful.

Over time, the clients’ perspective of the coffee shop was damaged and people started taking their business elsewhere.  Our theory was because they are paying top dollar for their caffeine fix in a boutique coffee shop which felt more and more like a cheap cafeteria.  My guess is the owner of the building wanted to cut costs and installed cheap laminate floors.  Could he/she have gone with a more durable laminate or vinyl?  Probably, but often landlords want to save money on construction and installation – it isn’t wrong, but it DID impact this particular business.

Simultaneously, the opposite can be true as well – if your business is one which offers discount services and products and you have quality hardwood floors or tile in your place of work, your potential clients may come in, get a feel for your office and decide before they even see your prices that your products and services are too expensive for them!

In short, what you want to take into consideration before installing floors in your place of work are the following factors:

  1. What kind of clients are you after?
  2. How do you want your potential clients to perceive you?
  3. Is your business going to have high or low traffic?
  4. Is your business going to be a restaurant or place which is around a lot of water?
  5. What is your budget?
  6. How soon are you looking to get your floors installed?

While this blog ties into a bit of branding and perception, the floor in your business establishment has the ability to make or break how your clients see you, as well as your bottom line.  Ensuring you get the right floors in your place of work is almost as important as the services and products you provide!

Flooring, Hardwood Floors

As a homeowner, having the best floors in the Ozarks is something we all want – it increases the value of our homes, it looks beautiful and more importantly, it helps to know what your kids are up to in the house!

School has started, and for many parents in SW Missouri, high school is a new frontier for eager and curious teenagers.  In all honesty, I shudder at the thought of my teenage years and some of the shenanigans I’ve pulled, which is why we’ve taken the time to write this little article.  For all the parents out there worried about some of the stunts their teenagers may or may not pull while under their roof, we present to you a blog on the best floors in the Ozarks for creeping teenagers!

What are the Best Floors in the Ozarks for Creeping Teenagers?

If I remember back to my golden years, the thing which always put a damper on my late-night plans were my parents’ hardwood floors.  They were beautiful, stunning, but over time they begin to breathe and creek.  I wouldn’t get three steps towards the door before my parents knew I was up to something.

The reason hardwood floors creak so much is due to our lovely yet unpredictable weather patterns.  Spring and fall can feel like winter or summer – sometimes the extremes vary from day-to-day living!  As such, hardwood floors have a tendency to shrink and expand depending on variables such as heat and humidity.

In fact, when good flooring contractors in the Ozarks install hardwoods, they often do their work with the air conditioner at full blast – this is so the wood shrinks, your install the hardwood floors, and when the A/C is turned off the boards expand creating a seamless wood floor.  Pretty cool, huh?

So, if you are looking to keep tabs on your teenagers, regardless of the season, our recommendation at Direct Install LLC is to install hardwood floors – the best floors in the Ozarks for creeping teenagers!  In fact, we can provide you a quotation free of charge within 48 hours of your inquiry.  Just give a ring!

Carpet

Carpets are awesome…unless they are stinky.  Think about it!  Nothing keeps your feet warm in the winter, is as comfortable to lay on with your kiddos, and provides just the right amount of texture to a room quite like carpet does.  But let’s be honest – when a carpet stinks, it brings the feel of your home down.

Sure, it may be time for an old-fashioned deep clean – you may go and rent a steam cleaner or even hire a company out of Springfield, Mo. to clean your carpets for you, but what happens when they leave and your carpets STILL smell funny?

Why Does My Carpet Smell Funny

There could be numerous reasons your carpet has a little stoink going on…perhaps you have animals which are still in the process of being house trained, or maybe the previous owners smoked, or had the habit of spilling things without cleaning up after themselves…whatever it is there are several solutions to getting that smell out of your carpet even when deep carpet cleaning equipment doesn’t work.

Regardless of the smells, there are several things you can do to can that odor.

  1. If you insist on cleaning your carpet yourself, check out this guide which helps you create the best carpet-cleaning solution for your olfactory senses. For mildew stench, they say to add one cup of vinegar to two cups of water and put it in a spray bottle and spray the smelly area.  Then, apply a ton of baking soda and let it sit for a few minutes before vacuuming the infected carpet.

  1. Hire a carpet cleaning company to come in and take care of the smell. Sometimes carpet cleaning companies in the Ozarks do a better job than the DIY rent-a-steam-cleaners do.  While these specialists are masters at their carpet-cleaning craft, there have been cases where the previous owners had a carpet restoration service come in only to find the smell was still there!  Give a carpet cleaning company a try but make sure you have a guarantee with them.  That way if the smell is still there after they finish you can at least get your money back!

  1. Another option would be to install new floors or carpet in your home. Especially if you have carpet in your home the smells and odors may have penetrated the mat underneath.  This is why apartment homes often have a lingering smell – the property management companies don’t typically change out the carpet between tenants.  What they do instead is clean the carpets and move onto the next unit.

In short, we at Direct Install LLC, located in SE Springfield, Mo service areas such as Nixa, Ozark, Rogersville, Republic, Branson, Strafford and Marshfield in the Ozarks.  While we specialize in flooring products and installation such as vinyl, tile, engineered hardwood, hardwood flooring, carpet and laminate, we are also a construction co-op company which has a painting, siding, and roofing divisions.  As such, we manage everything from residential construction projects to custom construction projects and large commercial construction projects in SW Missouri.  We are a construction management team if you will, and only hire and employ the best contractors in and around Springfield, Missouri.

Flooring, New Home

Food for thought – does all carpet capture and hold smells?

You just bought a new house and everything about it is perfect for you – the location is good, the exterior of your new home is pristine, and then you walk in and get a wave of “colorful” smells which waft into and offends your nostrils.  We’ve seen it all too much.

Perhaps the previous owners had animals, maybe they were smokers or perhaps there was an accident a while back which left a smoky after-smell.  Or, it could be the place smells like dust and mothballs (like my great grandma’s house).  Whatever the case, there is a cure!

Why Does My House Smell Funny

Regardless of the smells, there are several things you can do to can that odor.

  1. For one, you could repaint your home. Lingering smells are often a result of the paint on the walls – especially if the previous tenants were owners!

  1. Clean your ducts and vents! There is a story about a new tenant buying a home and moving in with her children who are extremely allergic to cats.  A few days before the big move, the new homeowner did her best to clean out the home including cleaning the carpets and putting new paint up.  What she DIDN’T know was there was cat hair and litter circulating throughout the home.  When she moved her five-year-old in she ended up in the hospital a week later because of her daughter’s severe allergy to cats!  Luckily the little girl is alive and well now – after a thorough ventilation cleaning, that is.

  1. Hire a carpet cleaning company to come in and take care of the smell. To be completely honest, this sometimes isn’t enough – there have been cases where the previous owners had a carpet restoration service come in only to find the smell was still there!

  1. Another option would be to install new floors or carpet in your home (get a free bid by filling out the form here). Especially if you have carpet in your home the smells and odors may have penetrated the mat underneath.  This is why apartment homes often have a lingering smell – the property management companies don’t typically change out the carpet between tenants.  What they do instead is clean the carpets and move onto the next unit.
