Flooring, Tile

Tile floors, like hardwood floors, is one of those things that makes a house a home.  Typically, tile is installed in bathrooms, kitchens, entryways and laundry rooms.  The entryway to your home is an especially good place – people sometimes track their dirty shoes inside, and tile is easier to clean than a stained carpet!  Before you decide to install tile in your home or office, you may want to consider the pros and cons.

For example, you probably won’t want tile throughout a daycare center which cares for toddlers, or in an elderly person’s home which, geographically speaking, experiences four seasons such as Springfield, MO.  (the cold may not be good for the bones in their feet)!  So, without further ado, here are the Pros and Cons of Installing Tile in Your Home or Office!

The Pros and Cons of Installing Tile in Your Home or Office

PROS of Installing Tile in Your Home

Tile is durable – it lasts a long time.

Tile is temperature and chemical resistant unlike hardwoods and carpet.

Tile is easy to maintain.

Tile is moisture resistant.

Tile doesn’t deteriorate easily.

They inhibit the chances of viruses, mold, fungi and other bacteria from developing

CONS of Installing Tile in Your Home

It’s hard and things can break when falling on them.  Not good for toddlers learning to walk.

If grout sealer isn’t used on grout, they are prone to stains, mildew and build-up

Tile is cold on bare feet in the winter!

It is a bit more expensive than carpet to install.

At Direct Install 417, we have a variety of different tile products including tile which looks like wood, or has a glass finish for a more unique look.  Our store is located at 3235 E. Sunshine St., Suite B in Springfield, MO.

Carpet

As far as carpet goes, it would seem in SW Missouri, people either love it or hate it.  Some people want carpet in the bedrooms and living room, where others would rather stick with hardwood or LVT.  Regardless of what your preference is, we took the time and liberty to write out the pros and cons of having carpet in your home or office.

Before we can list out the pros and cons, it may be in your highest interest to first determine how the carpet will be used.  Often times, the door off the garage leading into your home isn’t carpeted, and for a good reason:  we are wearing our shoes and if there is carpet there, it is more susceptible to stains.  Or, having carpet in the kitchen isn’t feasible.  Spills often happen in the kitchen, and this isn’t optimal for your carpet or your health.  If a stain doesn’t dry in a timely manner, your carpet can become a breeding ground for mold which isn’t good for anyone.

However, if you want to carpet your bedroom, chances are you aren’t spending the majority of your time there (unless you are a teenager – they do that sometimes).  As such, some people do enjoy being barefoot on some plush carpet as opposed to hardwoods.

PROS of Having Carpet in Your Home

  • Carpeting is soft on your feet and pleasant to walk on – it also keeps your feet warm during the winter.
  • It can be visually appealing to the look of a room – it can soften a room as well as provide a warm feeling.
  • It’s flexible — depending on style and material, it can give a room a casual look or a formal look depending on texture.
  • There are lots of color choices available, so you can color coordinate to your walls or your furniture.
  • It can be much more affordable than hardwood both in materials and to install.
  • Carpet can provide a level of sound insulation.

CONS of Having Carpet in Your Home

  • Carpet has a tendency to stain if you spill something on it. At Direct Instal 417, we have StainMaster carpet and carpet pad which repels animal stains and other stains.
  • Seams can show if the carpeting isn’t properly installed – this makes for an eyesore in a person’s home..
  • Carpet tends to show a wear pattern more than hard surfaces do.
  • Carpets can trap dust, allergens and moisture, as well as become a breeding ground for dust mites.
  • Maintenance can cost more in the future, depending on what kind of carpet you purchase and install.

At Direct Install 417, we have a variety of different carpets including StainMaster Carpet and pad.  StainMaster Carpet and pad is stain-resistant and is a higher quality nylon carpet which lasts much longer than polyester carpet.  Additionally, high-traffic areas can start to wear on your carpet- another feature included in the StainMaster Carpet and pad!

  6. To improve upon your accounting and book-keeping skills in order to better understand how to save your company money when tax season rolls around.

These are just a few of many goals you may have if you are the owner of a construction company, or if you are an individual wanting to ensure your construction project goes off without a hitch.

Commercial Construction

Commercial Construction is hot in Springfield, MO. right now – unfortunately, finding reputable flooring, painting, and finishing companies and/or contractors can be laborious (literally and figuratively).  Especially during peak periods, it can be close to impossible to find a skilled tradesman to work on your job!  This could be due to several reasons:

First of all, several contractors who may be currently available may not be fully insured with both general liability and workman’s compensation insurance.  Many construction project management companies require, by law, to have fully insured contractors in order to protect their interests as well as the safety of the contractors hired.

Secondly, the skilled laborers who are insured are often booked out months in advance.  This is where Direct Install 417, located conveniently in Springfield, MO., on E. Sunshine Street supplements construction and project management companies in the Ozarks:  not only do we carry both general liability and workman’s comp. insurance, but we employ quality workers who complete commercial construction projects on time and within budget.

With several references and multiple referrals under our belt for residential, commercial and new construction projects, Direct Install 417 has been able to operate successfully with minimal advertising and marketing.  In fact, most of our business originates from word-of-mouth from happy and satisfied customers in and around Springfield, MO.

In fact, with commercial construction booming in and around Springfield, MO., we have also expanded our services to include consulting.  If you have a job, little or small, you can hire our lead foreman to consult with you on your project, be it residential, remodel, commercial or new construction.  Not only will he be present daily to check in on your project, but he will also ensure the contractors you hired are completing the job on time, within budget, without cutting corners.

Flooring, Remodeling

Whether you are a first-time home buyer or have been living in your house for a while, there eventually comes a time where you want to remodel your kitchen or bath.  Perhaps the floors are outdated, or you want a new sink, backsplash or bathtub – despite what you are looking to fix up in your home, there are a few things you should know before hiring someone to remodel your kitchen or bath.

  1. Are the contractors or the remodeling business insured and licensed?

This is pretty high on the list when you are looking for someone to remodel your kitchen or bath.  You want the contractors to definitely be insured.  If something goes wrong during the remodel, and if your contractors or the business you hired isn’t licensed, chances are you will have to pay the unexpected damages and expenses out of pocket.  If you hire an insured business on the other hand, their insurance can and will cover any damages incurred during the remodel.  This saves the customer tons of money.

While everyone wants the cheapest labor, it is important to remember this:  skilled labor isn’t cheap, and cheap labor isn’t necessarily skilled.  If you want to have something done, it’s best to get it done right the first time in our opinion.  Ask if the business is covered for both general liability and workman’s comp.

  1. Does the remodeling business have good online reviews?

It pays to do your research.  Check reviews on the Better Business Bureau, Google and FaceBook to ensure you are hiring a decent and established company to remodel your kitchen or bath. If you do find a negative review, read through it carefully.  Was it something unrelated to the remodeling such as a truck tearing up the grass when unloading material?  Were they late to complete the job?

If you really want to be thorough, message someone who left a bad review on their business page and find out exactly what went wrong.  Then, when you meet with the business, find out their side of the story as well.  If the business handles it unprofessionally, you can expect to experience the same behavior after your remodel job has started.

  1. Is the remodeling company asking for 100% of the money for the remodel up front?

While many retail stores and showrooms do this now, many contractors and businesses without a storefront shouldn’t.  Stores and showrooms will charge up front if there are people working in the shop and there is overhead.  However, if it is a company or contractor asking for all the money up front and they don’t have any reviews, are not registered with the state or are not licensed, you could be setting yourself up for failure if you hire them.  There have been many cases where contractors take the money and run after failing to show for the remodel job a customer hired them for.

  1. How long has the company been in Springfield, MO.?

While there may be several contractors moving to Missouri, again, you want to see their track record.  They may be moving here for personal or professional reasons, or they may be moving here because they are running away from another town where they have taken advantage of people who hired them to remodel their kitchen or bath.  Again, you will need to ask yourself whether or not they have insurance and are registered with the state.  Do they have insurance and are registered with the state?

  1. Are they a skilled tradesman/woman?

How many years of experience do they have as a tradesman or tradeswoman?  Do they have references from past customers and clients?  Don’t only rely on pictures, and whatever references they have (it could just be family and friends).  Instead, do your due diligence.  Ask the contractor to show you what he or she is remodeling currently.  Call or message some of their past clients after finding out who they have done work for and find out what they have to say.

There are many very skilled contractors and businesses out there which specialize in remodeling kitchen and bathrooms.  Unfortunately, though, there are a couple who give the professionals a very bad name.  This can be said about most industries, but seeing as construction isn’t always cheap, it can leave an especially bad taste in a person’s mouth after a sordid experience with a crappy contractor.

If you or someone you know would like to remodel their kitchen and/or bath, Direct Install 417 is not only licensed with the state of Missouri, but also carries general liability and workman’s compensation insurance.  All of our contractors are professional and skilled tradesmen who have many years of experience and who take pride in their work!

Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors are beautiful, durable, and you have the option of refinishing them if they need to be updated – but what happens when disaster strikes?  Weather in SW Missouri can be unpredictable, and water is the worst enemy of hardwood floors.

The thing with hardwood floors is it absorbs water.  Whether it is a small spill or a flood catastrophe, there are a few things you can do to protect your hardwood floors…the biggest being to dry your hardwood floor and subfloor as quickly as possible!

Things You Can Do To Protect Your Hardwood Floors From Water Damage

  1. Soak up any excess water standing on your hardwood floors. If it is a small spill, usually a cloth will do. However, if it is a big spill or flood, you may want to consider using a water vacuum or hiring restoration specialists who can remove the excess water and speed up the drying process so your wood floors don’t buckle.
  2. Ensure ALL the moisture has been removed from your hardwood floors. The longer your hardwood floors are exposed to water, the more likely your floors will get mold. Mold doesn’t only damage your hardwood floors, but it can seriously affect the air quality of your home.  Be sure to get all the water out of your beautiful hardwoods as soon as possible!
  3. Do NOT try refinishing your floor until there is no moisture. The reason being is many homeowners may think their hardwood floors are dry without knowing for sure, and when they go to refinish the floors it makes the situation worse!  It can take several weeks or months to get your hardwood floors to dry (which is why it is important to hire a professional restoration company in SW Missouri).
  4. Always check your subfloor for water damage – it isn’t good enough to only check your hardwood floors and then try to refinish them! If you ARE going to refinish your hardwood floors after water damage has occurred, you will want to make sure everything has been efficiently dried.
  5. If your home has a crawlspace, you may want to make sure there is no moisture there.  Again, this can affect your floors in a negative way!

Flooring, Hardwood Floors

Long lasting floors is something many homeowners want.  In fact, some go the extra mile to pick out the best hardwood floors, tile floors, carpet or engineered vinyl planks in order to NOT have to worry about their flooring buckling, warping or coming up in some way.  The sad thing is when it comes to flooring, that age-old adage doesn’t work… you know, the one that says, “you get what you pay for.”  In our experience, this isn’t always true.

You Don’t Always Get What You Pay For

Picture this:  you go with your beloved spouse to a flooring store here in Springfield, Missouri to pick out some high-quality floors.  You are greeted by a smiling salesperson who takes you through the gambit of what they have to offer.  After a bit of discussion and going back and forth with your other half, you agree to purchase some high-quality hardwood floors which will really give your forever home that extra character, finishing you wanted.  The salesmen also throws in flooring installation into the mix, you pick a date and you are one step closer to enjoying your long-lasting floors.  Or so you thought.

What your salesmen didn’t know was that the floors in your home were concrete – a substance no hardwood floor should be nailed to.  Nope, you actually needed a plywood subfloor or OSB subfloor, but how would you know?  Your job was to go pick out the type of floor you wanted, pick a time for the installers and then pay the pied piper.

The story doesn’t end here though – not only do the installers KNOW not to nail hardwood floors to concrete, they do it anyway because that is what they are told to do!  The problem with this is while you picked out beautiful high-quality hardwood floors, they aren’t going to last because they weren’t installed right.  After a bit of time, they begin to buckle, squeak and do all sorts of funny things because it wasn’t installed correctly!

Finding the RIGHT Flooring and the RIGHT Flooring Installers in SW Missouri

It can be difficult finding the right flooring products and the right flooring installers in SW Missouri, but it isn’t impossible.  Our recommendation is to always do a background check on the companies and workers you are sourcing to install your floors.

  1. Check the Better Business Bureau for ratings.
  2. Check Angie’s List for reviews on contractors.
  3. Buy your flooring products from a reputable store in Springfield, Missouri.

Flooring

Babies, toddlers, kids and more – they are the light of our lives and we do the best we can for them as parents.  If I had it my way, I would have lined the floor and walls with foam – but seeing as that wasn’t (and still isn’t) practical or cheap, we should look into the next best thing:  baby-friendly floors!

Many first-time home buyers are young families looking to settle down and start a family.  And while people love the look of hardwood floors, not to mention the fact that increases the value of your home, the last thing you want is to have little plastic wheels and toys wearing your floors down.

On the contrary, you don’t want your littles falling down and seriously hurting themselves on that beautiful tile mosaic in the living room!  I remember being small and watching my little sister spin round and round right in front of the all-brick fireplace right before she gashed her head open on it because she was too wobbly to stand straight.  Nothing a few stitches couldn’t fix, but still – it was traumatic for me as a child, and definitely for my parents (they lovingly nicknamed her “scarface” after that incident).

Because we are not only crazy about our kids, but floors as well, we have compiled a list of baby-friendly floors for you and your current or future brood in SW Missouri!

Best Baby-Friendly Floors For Your Littles

Choice #3 Hardwood Floors

Pros:  As stated above, hardwood floors are elegant, beautiful and increase the value of your home.  It’s easy to clean up messes on, but try to avoid too many liquid spills.

Cons:  It’s a hard surface which doesn’t make a soft surface for your kiddos to fall on.  Additionally, the do take SOME maintenance in order to keep them in pristine condition.  Oh, and don’t let water sit on them too long – wood has a tendency to warp!

SOLUTION:  Get a kiddie rug or foam mat to put over that hardwood floor!  That way the floor AND your littles are protected!

Choice #2 Tile Floors

Pros:  If installed correctly, tile can last forever and can take a beating from toys and the constant pitter-pattering of feet.  Additionally, there is not much maintenance which goes into keeping up tile floors except usual cleaning.  Stain clean-up is easy and won’t hurt your floors…you know…unless it is acid.  Don’t let your kids play with acid.

Cons:  Like hardwoods, it’s a hard surface.  Your baby falling down won’t hurt the floor, but your kiddo will feel it!

SOLUTION:  Also like hardwoods, get a large area rug or foam mat so your children have something cushiony to crawl over.

Choice #1 Carpet

Pros:  It’s comfy, it’s warm, and it can soften a fall with ease.  Some carpets can be very easy to clean, and carpet can actually help with indoor air quality (despite what some sources say).  Numerous studies have repeatedly shown that carpet prevents dust and other allergens from becoming airborne, where they are easily inhaled.

Cons:  VOC’s could be an issue as well as stains.  Be sure to buy carpet with low VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) or your child may be inhaling some.  Be sure to get a stain-resistant carpet – children can be messy and there is nothing quite like purchasing a new carpet and then having to deal with the stains for the next few years!

SOLUTION:  Be sure to get a stainmaster carpet pad can a good quality carpet.  Don’t be dazzled by low prices (if you bend the carpet at the seam and can see the backing, that is some CHEAP carpet).

The top three are our choices in best floors for babies, toddlers, and kids of all shapes and sizes.  Sure, there are other alternatives such as cork and bamboo, but they come with their own set of issues.  For example, did you know bamboo flooring, if not made in the U.S.A. could have been made with toxic chemicals?  Or that cork is a great choice except if you keep a heavy piece of furniture in one place too long it leaves a dent in the floor?  Just some things to think about!

That being said, even if you do have hardwood floors, tile floors or carpet installed, the condition of your flooring product plus the craftsmanship of your installers will have an impact on the overall quality of your floors.  #foodforthought

Tile

There is nothing quite like the disappointment of anticipating a beautiful flooring job, only to realize after everything is said and done, the contractor did a shotty tile job.  It gives us the hooboo jeebies!!  And seeing as Halloween is approaching fast, we aim to educate Springfieldians about what to look for in your tile floor.

Tile flooring, when installed properly, is absolutely stunning.  It can last for years, it is aesthetically pleasing, and is wonderful to have under your feet…Even in the winter!  We know a lot of people would rather have carpet instead of tile in SW Missouri because of the cold winters – but several of our clients opt to have warmwire under their tile during those chilly months to keep their feet warm for them, their family and their furbabies.

INTERESTING FACT:
For hygiene freaks, ceramic tile flooring is perfect as it does not absorb fumes, smoke, odor, and retain liquids.

But how do you know someone installed your tile flooring, bathroom or kitchen backsplash correctly?  How can you spot a contractor doing a shotty tile job BEFORE the install is complete and they run off with your hard-earned cash?

It’s amazing how often we have gone into a client’s job and had to redo a job from an incompetent (or just lazy) contractor.  In fact, one of the sad truths about elderly living in Springfield, Mo. and surrounding areas is how often a contractor takes advantage of them in order to make a quick buck.

That’s why we took the time to sit down and write out what to do look for so you can catch a shotty tile job in the making – this won’t only save you money, but it can stop the many headaches awaiting in the near future.

Spotting a Shotty Tile Job – Things to Look Out For:

  1. Uneven grout lines

When you come in to inspect your floor contractor’s work, be sure to check the grout lines.  If they are all respectively the same size, including the lines near the wall and around your toilet in the bathroom, you can breathe a little easier.

  1. Crooked tiles

Mosiac and custom tile jobs aside, having crooked tiles is another thing you will want your contractor to take care of.  You can usually spot this by looking at the grout lines, but keep in mind, we have seen people purchase sub-par tile squares which can lead to uneven tile sizes.  Like above, uneven grout lines usually will give away the crooked tiles.

  1. Cracked tile after floor has been laid

Sometimes this can’t be helped, especially if your tile floor was installed over concrete substrate which cracked over time, or if the tile floor took a blow (such as something heavy falling on it).

Other times, it is the fault of the contractor.  For example, if the tile job was installed before the concrete substrate fully cured, you may get a cracked tile. Keep in mind, cheap or subpar tile also cracks a little easier than premium tiles.

  1. Wave your hand over the tile –is it even or wavy? Is it level?

This is something you usually can’t check until after the tile has been installed.  Run your hand over it, or do a visual check to see if there are waves and dips in the tile – then bring it up with your contractor!

  1. Bad transition between adjacent surfaces

An example of this would be a tiled tub wall meeting painted sheetrock, or a tile floor meeting a hardwood floor.  All transitions must be tight, clean and seamless – if not, you can assume either the contractor didn’t know what he was doing, or simply didn’t care!

All in all, there is nothing quite like the excitement of having a new floor installed only to feel absolutely livid when you realize the tile floor wasn’t installed correctly!  Our suggestion is to hire a reputable company in Springfield, Missouri by checking online FaceBook and Google Reviews, as well as seeing if your contractor or the flooring organization is on Angie’s list.  When it comes to flooring, a little bit of research goes a long way!
