Flooring, Hardwood Floors

Long lasting floors is something many homeowners want.  In fact, some go the extra mile to pick out the best hardwood floors, tile floors, carpet or engineered vinyl planks in order to NOT have to worry about their flooring buckling, warping or coming up in some way.  The sad thing is when it comes to flooring, that age-old adage doesn’t work… you know, the one that says, “you get what you pay for.”  In our experience, this isn’t always true.

You Don’t Always Get What You Pay For

Picture this:  you go with your beloved spouse to a flooring store here in Springfield, Missouri to pick out some high-quality floors.  You are greeted by a smiling salesperson who takes you through the gambit of what they have to offer.  After a bit of discussion and going back and forth with your other half, you agree to purchase some high-quality hardwood floors which will really give your forever home that extra character, finishing you wanted.  The salesmen also throws in flooring installation into the mix, you pick a date and you are one step closer to enjoying your long-lasting floors.  Or so you thought.

What your salesmen didn’t know was that the floors in your home were concrete – a substance no hardwood floor should be nailed to.  Nope, you actually needed a plywood subfloor or OSB subfloor, but how would you know?  Your job was to go pick out the type of floor you wanted, pick a time for the installers and then pay the pied piper.

The story doesn’t end here though – not only do the installers KNOW not to nail hardwood floors to concrete, they do it anyway because that is what they are told to do!  The problem with this is while you picked out beautiful high-quality hardwood floors, they aren’t going to last because they weren’t installed right.  After a bit of time, they begin to buckle, squeak and do all sorts of funny things because it wasn’t installed correctly!

Finding the RIGHT Flooring and the RIGHT Flooring Installers in SW Missouri

It can be difficult finding the right flooring products and the right flooring installers in SW Missouri, but it isn’t impossible.  Our recommendation is to always do a background check on the companies and workers you are sourcing to install your floors.

  1. Check the Better Business Bureau for ratings.
  2. Check Angie’s List for reviews on contractors.
  3. Buy your flooring products from a reputable store in Springfield, Missouri.

Flooring

Babies, toddlers, kids and more – they are the light of our lives and we do the best we can for them as parents.  If I had it my way, I would have lined the floor and walls with foam – but seeing as that wasn’t (and still isn’t) practical or cheap, we should look into the next best thing:  baby-friendly floors!

Many first-time home buyers are young families looking to settle down and start a family.  And while people love the look of hardwood floors, not to mention the fact that increases the value of your home, the last thing you want is to have little plastic wheels and toys wearing your floors down.

On the contrary, you don’t want your littles falling down and seriously hurting themselves on that beautiful tile mosaic in the living room!  I remember being small and watching my little sister spin round and round right in front of the all-brick fireplace right before she gashed her head open on it because she was too wobbly to stand straight.  Nothing a few stitches couldn’t fix, but still – it was traumatic for me as a child, and definitely for my parents (they lovingly nicknamed her “scarface” after that incident).

Because we are not only crazy about our kids, but floors as well, we have compiled a list of baby-friendly floors for you and your current or future brood in SW Missouri!

Best Baby-Friendly Floors For Your Littles

Choice #3 Hardwood Floors

Pros:  As stated above, hardwood floors are elegant, beautiful and increase the value of your home.  It’s easy to clean up messes on, but try to avoid too many liquid spills.

Cons:  It’s a hard surface which doesn’t make a soft surface for your kiddos to fall on.  Additionally, the do take SOME maintenance in order to keep them in pristine condition.  Oh, and don’t let water sit on them too long – wood has a tendency to warp!

SOLUTION:  Get a kiddie rug or foam mat to put over that hardwood floor!  That way the floor AND your littles are protected!

Choice #2 Tile Floors

Pros:  If installed correctly, tile can last forever and can take a beating from toys and the constant pitter-pattering of feet.  Additionally, there is not much maintenance which goes into keeping up tile floors except usual cleaning.  Stain clean-up is easy and won’t hurt your floors…you know…unless it is acid.  Don’t let your kids play with acid.

Cons:  Like hardwoods, it’s a hard surface.  Your baby falling down won’t hurt the floor, but your kiddo will feel it!

SOLUTION:  Also like hardwoods, get a large area rug or foam mat so your children have something cushiony to crawl over.

Choice #1 Carpet

Pros:  It’s comfy, it’s warm, and it can soften a fall with ease.  Some carpets can be very easy to clean, and carpet can actually help with indoor air quality (despite what some sources say).  Numerous studies have repeatedly shown that carpet prevents dust and other allergens from becoming airborne, where they are easily inhaled.

Cons:  VOC’s could be an issue as well as stains.  Be sure to buy carpet with low VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) or your child may be inhaling some.  Be sure to get a stain-resistant carpet – children can be messy and there is nothing quite like purchasing a new carpet and then having to deal with the stains for the next few years!

SOLUTION:  Be sure to get a stainmaster carpet pad can a good quality carpet.  Don’t be dazzled by low prices (if you bend the carpet at the seam and can see the backing, that is some CHEAP carpet).

The top three are our choices in best floors for babies, toddlers, and kids of all shapes and sizes.  Sure, there are other alternatives such as cork and bamboo, but they come with their own set of issues.  For example, did you know bamboo flooring, if not made in the U.S.A. could have been made with toxic chemicals?  Or that cork is a great choice except if you keep a heavy piece of furniture in one place too long it leaves a dent in the floor?  Just some things to think about!

That being said, even if you do have hardwood floors, tile floors or carpet installed, the condition of your flooring product plus the craftsmanship of your installers will have an impact on the overall quality of your floors.  #foodforthought

Carpet, Engineered Hardwood, Flooring, Hardwood Floors, Laminate, Tile, Vinyl

Flooring price can range in SW Missouri.  Whether you are buying or flipping a house in Springfield, Mo or SW Missouri, or perhaps just updating a rental, one of the biggest factors in construction is pricing.  Many of us have a budget to work with, and while we want our home, rental or flip to look amazing, pricing is always a factor.

As such, we put our heads together at the Direct Install Flooring Showroom, and decided to come up with a generic list of price ranges for various flooring products.  Keep in mind, there is a difference in price between buying flooring materials and then installing them.

*PROTIP*

Many “discount” or “cheap” flooring companies in SW Missouri have a habit of undercharging labor and overcharging on materials…this is so you want to use them to install the product instead of another company.  We’ve seen it before and we will see it again – a customer is unhappy with the contractors of one of these stores, so when he or she calls another installation company and gets their installation price, it looks to be more expensive than the store he or she already bought from.  This gives the illusion that other flooring companies in SW Missouri are trying to pull a fast one on them, when in reality, the “discount” or “cheap” flooring stores are messing with the prices.

Our advice, always get a WRITTEN QUOTATION for flooring materials and installation.

#themoreyouknow

Keep in mind the below prices typically reflect an approximation for various flooring materials and installation.  Tear out and disposal of old floors often have a different price associated with it!

Carpet Price

Low end starts at $.60 per square foot and high end can go up to $7 per square foot (for extreme custom-work).

If carpet pad isn’t included, expect an additional $.20 to $.55 per square foot for padding, and another $.40 to $.60 for installation!

Tile Flooring Price

Tile flooring prices vary widely, from a dollar per square foot for low-end materials up to $25 per square foot.

Tile installation can range from $5 to $12 per square foot.  Sure, you may find installers to do it for cheaper, but often if you purchase subpar labor, you are going to get subpar installation.

Vinyl Flooring Price

Vinyl price ranges from $.75 to $6 per square foot.

Installation can range from $1.50 per square foot to $4 per square foot.

Laminate Flooring Price

Cheap laminate prices start at less than $1 per square foot and ranges to $5 or $6 per square foot.

Laminate flooring installation charges range from $1.50 to $3 per square foot to install.

Hardwood Flooring Price

Low-end hardwood flooring ranges from $2 a square foot up to $30 a square foot or more for high-end materials.

Hardwood flooring installation typically runs you between $3 to $5 per square foot.

Engineered Hardwood Flooring Price

More and more people are going with engineered hardwood floors because of affordability and durability.  If there is a  moisture issue with engineered hardwood, you won’t have to tear it out and install another kind of flooring because engineered hardwood can take a hit!  Not if you FLOOD the place, but if moisture is an issue.

The price range of engineered hardwood flooring is like that of hardwood flooring.

A person typically pays $3 per square foot to install engineered hardwood flooring.

Flooring

Whether you are looking for your home, office or rental, finding the right floors for high traffic areas is crucial.  I am quite particular myself – if I do something (or hire someone to do something), I want it done right the first time so they don’t have to go back over it and redo it.  I also am fond of the “one-and-done” mentality:  install a quality, durable floor right the first time so I don’t have to keep replacing it every couple of years!

All things considered, if you have a high traffic area in your home, office or rental, you may want to choose flooring which can withstand the stress it will inevitably go under.

The Best Floors for High Traffic Areas

Tile Floors

Pros

Glazed ceramic tile is very durable and resistant to scratches and is also water resistant. Tile comes in a variety of sizes and materials, such as marble, porcelain, travertine, slate, and granite.  Tile is also easy to clean.

Cons

Grout can be difficult to clean, tile can be cold to walk on, and can be loud to walk on (especially in heels).  There are heating pads which can go under the tile but those come with additional costs.

Laminate Floors

Pros

Laminate is a very affordable option for flooring.  It doesn’t scratch easily (you can get almost any scratch out with a big of vegetable oil) and it can look like real tile or hardwood floors and it is easy to maintain.

Cons

Standing water can destroy your laminate flooring.  You cannot refinish laminate flooring so once it has been damaged, that is it!

Solid Hardwood Floors

Pros

Looks nice, easy to maintain and increases the value of your home.

Cons

Like tile, hardwoods can be loud to walk on, plus they are much more expensive than other types of flooring.  Keep in mind hardwood floors will require refinishing from time to time.

Engineered Hardwood Floors

Pros

Engineered hardwood floors are often more durable than solid hardwood floors.  There are also options available whereby you can purchase water resistant engineered hardwood floors.  You can also refinished engineered hardwood depending on its’ thickness.  It also is less likely to swell or warp due to moisture.

Cons

If you get an engineered hardwood floor where the veneer is too thin (the wooden outer layer of the floor), you can’t refinish your floors!  Also, while the look and feel of engineered hardwood is much like real hardwood floors, it is still more pricey than tile, laminate or carpet to install.

Floors NOT good for High Traffic Areas

Now that we have touched on some of the best floors for high traffic areas, let’s get into some flooring you will want to avoid in your high traffic areas: the two being vinyl flooring and carpet.

Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl flooring is susceptible to yellowing over time, as well as ripping and tearing if you are using sub-par materials.  Additionally, it has to be installed correctly – any small grains caught underneath the vinyl can cause bumps which can lead to rips and tears as well.  Unfortunately, while a quality vinyl floor can last up to 20 years, vinyl is often created with chemicals which, when installed, can linger in the air causing eye, and throat irritations.

Vinyl flooring is not impervious to scratches, which is why it isn’t that great for high traffic areas.

Carpet

Where natural wool carpet is durable and long-lasting, it is susceptible to stains and can be expensive.  It is really great at absorbing wine, juices and pet stains, and unfortunately can be discolored easily.  Be cautious of using bleach – it can completely dissolve the material!

Synthetic carpet, on the other hand, is stain resistant and can be exceptionally strong.  However, there is less variety and it is often easily damaged.  High-traffic areas is not so good for polyester carpet, and synthetic carpet can be damaged by heat and too much friction.

In summary, regardless of your budget you can find quality flooring which can withstand high traffic areas in your home, office or rental.

Flooring

They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression, and having the wrong floor in your office can drastically affect your clients’ first impression of you while simultaneously affecting your bottom line.

For example, my associate and I used to frequent a lovely local coffee shop in Springfield, Mo.  Their coffee was exquisite, and like any designer coffee establishment, their coffee prices were comparable to a notable big chain which hails from Seattle, WA.  Anywho, we’ve been going there for some time and after a while, their laminate floors started coming up, peeling and chipping.  In fact, after a while, no matter how well they cleaned their floors, they still looked awful.

Over time, the clients’ perspective of the coffee shop was damaged and people started taking their business elsewhere.  Our theory was because they are paying top dollar for their caffeine fix in a boutique coffee shop which felt more and more like a cheap cafeteria.  My guess is the owner of the building wanted to cut costs and installed cheap laminate floors.  Could he/she have gone with a more durable laminate or vinyl?  Probably, but often landlords want to save money on construction and installation – it isn’t wrong, but it DID impact this particular business.

Simultaneously, the opposite can be true as well – if your business is one which offers discount services and products and you have quality hardwood floors or tile in your place of work, your potential clients may come in, get a feel for your office and decide before they even see your prices that your products and services are too expensive for them!

In short, what you want to take into consideration before installing floors in your place of work are the following factors:

  1. What kind of clients are you after?
  2. How do you want your potential clients to perceive you?
  3. Is your business going to have high or low traffic?
  4. Is your business going to be a restaurant or place which is around a lot of water?
  5. What is your budget?
  6. How soon are you looking to get your floors installed?

While this blog ties into a bit of branding and perception, the floor in your business establishment has the ability to make or break how your clients see you, as well as your bottom line.  Ensuring you get the right floors in your place of work is almost as important as the services and products you provide!

Flooring, Hardwood Floors

As a homeowner, having the best floors in the Ozarks is something we all want – it increases the value of our homes, it looks beautiful and more importantly, it helps to know what your kids are up to in the house!

School has started, and for many parents in SW Missouri, high school is a new frontier for eager and curious teenagers.  In all honesty, I shudder at the thought of my teenage years and some of the shenanigans I’ve pulled, which is why we’ve taken the time to write this little article.  For all the parents out there worried about some of the stunts their teenagers may or may not pull while under their roof, we present to you a blog on the best floors in the Ozarks for creeping teenagers!

What are the Best Floors in the Ozarks for Creeping Teenagers?

If I remember back to my golden years, the thing which always put a damper on my late-night plans were my parents’ hardwood floors.  They were beautiful, stunning, but over time they begin to breathe and creek.  I wouldn’t get three steps towards the door before my parents knew I was up to something.

The reason hardwood floors creak so much is due to our lovely yet unpredictable weather patterns.  Spring and fall can feel like winter or summer – sometimes the extremes vary from day-to-day living!  As such, hardwood floors have a tendency to shrink and expand depending on variables such as heat and humidity.

In fact, when good flooring contractors in the Ozarks install hardwoods, they often do their work with the air conditioner at full blast – this is so the wood shrinks, your install the hardwood floors, and when the A/C is turned off the boards expand creating a seamless wood floor.  Pretty cool, huh?

So, if you are looking to keep tabs on your teenagers, regardless of the season, our recommendation at Direct Install LLC is to install hardwood floors – the best floors in the Ozarks for creeping teenagers!  In fact, we can provide you a quotation free of charge within 48 hours of your inquiry.  Just give a ring!

Flooring, New Home

Food for thought – does all carpet capture and hold smells?

You just bought a new house and everything about it is perfect for you – the location is good, the exterior of your new home is pristine, and then you walk in and get a wave of “colorful” smells which waft into and offends your nostrils.  We’ve seen it all too much.

Perhaps the previous owners had animals, maybe they were smokers or perhaps there was an accident a while back which left a smoky after-smell.  Or, it could be the place smells like dust and mothballs (like my great grandma’s house).  Whatever the case, there is a cure!

Why Does My House Smell Funny

Regardless of the smells, there are several things you can do to can that odor.

  1. For one, you could repaint your home. Lingering smells are often a result of the paint on the walls – especially if the previous tenants were owners!

  1. Clean your ducts and vents! There is a story about a new tenant buying a home and moving in with her children who are extremely allergic to cats.  A few days before the big move, the new homeowner did her best to clean out the home including cleaning the carpets and putting new paint up.  What she DIDN’T know was there was cat hair and litter circulating throughout the home.  When she moved her five-year-old in she ended up in the hospital a week later because of her daughter’s severe allergy to cats!  Luckily the little girl is alive and well now – after a thorough ventilation cleaning, that is.

  1. Hire a carpet cleaning company to come in and take care of the smell. To be completely honest, this sometimes isn’t enough – there have been cases where the previous owners had a carpet restoration service come in only to find the smell was still there!

  1. Another option would be to install new floors or carpet in your home (get a free bid by filling out the form here). Especially if you have carpet in your home the smells and odors may have penetrated the mat underneath.  This is why apartment homes often have a lingering smell – the property management companies don’t typically change out the carpet between tenants.  What they do instead is clean the carpets and move onto the next unit.

Flooring, Hardwood Floors
Hardwood floors are absolutely gorgeous when kept in pristine condition, but maintaining your hardwood floors in the Ozarks is another thing entirely.  With our ever-changing weather and humidity, not only can this harm your floors, but it can damage them beyond repair if they aren’t taken care of.

Think about it – wood expands in heat and contracts when it is cold.  If your hardwood floors aren’t protected and maintained, water damage can have an irreversible effect on the life of them.  And let’s be honest, replacing them isn’t always cheap!  With that in mind, here are some tips on how you can maintain and protect your hardwoods.
How to Maintain Your Hardwood Floors in the Ozarks:
Maintaining your hardwood floors on a daily, weekly and monthly basis is different.

Daily

Sweep or dust mop your hardwood floors.

Weekly

Vacuum using the bare floor setting.

Monthly

Clean with a recommended and proven wood flooring  cleaner

Every 3 – 5 Years

Apply a maintenance coat to your hardwood floors.

Every Decade or Two

Sand and refinish your hardwood floors.

When maintaining your hardwood floors, be sure to use a dry microfiber mop, and never NEVER use vinyl or tile-cleaning chemicals on your hardwoods.  In fact, do not wet mop or steam mop a hardwood floor either as this can damage the wood.  You will also want to make sure you have felt bottoms or stick-on felt protectors on any chairs or furniture which can scratch, scuff or dim the surface of your hardwood floors.

Last but not least, winters in Springfield, Ozark, Nixa, Republic, Rogersville, Branson and the Ozarks, in general, can be very damaging to your beautiful hardwood floors.  One of the things which can help is to keep a humidifier – this helps to minimize gaps in the floor boards.

As part of the Direct Install team, our passion is flooring and hardwood floor installation and repair.  When we install floors for our clients in the Ozarks, we make sure they understand how to take care of them so they can get the most life out of them.

In summary, maintaining hardwood floors isn’t difficult, but it does take small actions completed consistently over time.  The reward is a floor which not only makes a home, but makes memories too.
